The Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) sponsors the New Researchers Conference (NRC) every year, which takes place the week before JSM. NRC promotes networking and interaction among new researchers in the field of statistics, biostatistics, and probability, including those who expect to hold tenure-track positions in the near future. Attendees will present their research through a brief expository talk and/or poster, and have the chance to mingle throughout the day. There will be longer talks by senior researchers, and panels on various topics such as publishing, grant applications, collaboration, and mentoring.

Anyone who has received a Ph.D. in or after 2017, or expects to receive a Ph.D. by the end of 2024, is eligible to attend, though participation is by invitation only. Travel (up to $500) and accomodation costs for the participants will be fully covered!

The meeting will take place at the Oregon State University during August 1 - 3, 2024, just prior to the JSM.

Click here for the list of previous NRCs.

You can submit your application by completing this application form. There will be poster and speed talk sessions for participants, so you will need to provide a title and abstract accordingly.

Note that all NRC attendees must have IMS membership. You can obtain IMS membership here.

In our selection, we will give priority to individuals who are starting or recently started their faculty position, although we will consider applications from postdocs and senior graduate students as well.

Application deadline, April 30 2024

07/31/2024 update: The program book is available through this link.

During the afternoon of August 3, after NRC has concluded, there is an opportunity to join the Preparing to Teach workshop. This workshop aims to help prepare graduate students for a role as faculty responsible for teaching statistics and data science to undergraduate students across a variety of disciplines.
